Running your own business is certainly a journey; one that can be even better with the right partner! Josh and Steven are two friends who have turned their love of coffee and customer service into a burgeoning business empire with Jamaica Blue.
Originally from China, the two knew each other before they both moved to Australia to study. Inspired by another friend who owned a Jamaica Blue and had good reports, they began researching the franchise.
A Seriously Good Franchise Model
“We spent three to four months researching before choosing Jamaica Blue,” says Josh. “We looked at many other café franchises,” Josh recalls, “but we were really attracted by the training and support offered by Foodco, the great locations, and the high quality of the coffee at Jamaica Blue.”
“It really has a consistently strong reputation for coffee. That’s one of the most important things when opening a café – it’s what gets customers coming back again and again!”
Josh had only worked casually in hospitality before teaming up with Steven to open their first Jamaica Blue. With a background in accounting and marketing, he found his skills came in handy when running the business.
However, one of the main positives of the Foodco network is the comprehensive training we provide in running a business, covering everything from food and coffee preparation to HR and business management.
Today, the duo are the proud owners of three Jamaica Blue cafés, two of them located within Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre, one of Perth’s largest shopping centres.
A Prime Location For Foot Traffic
Located 26 km from the CBD, Joondalup serves as a bustling regional hub, and the scale of the Lakeside Joondalup shopping centre easily accommodates their two stores. Their new Jamaica Blue café also enjoys a prime location near a busy entrance of the shopping centre.
Josh says that the support they have received from Foodco is a standout factor in their success. “When we opened our first store, we had a team in place for a week supporting us,” says Josh. “We also still speak to the head office team often—probably every week! They always get back to us really quickly if we have any questions.”
Partnering in Promotion
To promote the new store, Josh and Steven have been proactive with marketing efforts, such as giving coffee vouchers to local retailers. They also ran a successful $3 coffee day and are planning a Free Coffee Day next month. Foodco’s national team regularly sends through promotional campaign ideas and designs. We also support the network through digital marketing.
While running three franchises is a busy endeavor, having Steven as a partner allows Josh to maintain a healthy work-life balance. He works in the stores three days a week, giving him time to spend with his family.
